The Wednesday Loop for Frisco

Howdy, Frisco! šŸŒ¤ļø

Happy Wednesday, y’all, and can I just say, this week’s weather so far has been surprisingly decent! No frozen car doors, no driveway slip-n-slides, and I actually saw a blue sky that didn’t look like it wanted to fight me. A true Texas miracle in February.

So, while we bask in this brief stretch of calm, here’s your midweek dose of Texas headlines, events, and local happenings worth knowing about.

Texas Edition

šŸ’ø Texas Opens $1 Billion School Voucher Program

Starting Wednesday, Texas families can officially apply for the state’s brand new $1 billion Education Freedom Account program, giving parents the option to use public funds for private school tuition, textbooks, tutoring, and even transportation.

Families can receive up to $10,474 per student, and students with disabilities could qualify for as much as $30,000 annually. The application window runs through March 17, with funds distributed in stages starting this summer.

It’s the biggest shakeup to Texas education funding in decades, and not without controversy. Critics argue it siphons money from public schools, while supporters call it a win for parental choice. Either way, expect this one to stay in the headlines (and in dinner table debates) for a long time.

🤰 Texas Studies Maternal Health in Jails

Texas is taking a hard look at what happens to pregnant women behind bars. A new yearlong state study is gathering data on everything from prenatal care and miscarriage rates to delivery conditions inside county jails.

Early numbers show around 430 pregnant inmates each month, with 42 deliveries and 28 miscarriages between September and November of last year. Advocates hope the findings will shed light on gaps in medical care and push lawmakers toward reform.

The effort follows years of reports detailing neglect and preventable deaths, and for many advocates, it’s a long overdue first step toward better accountability and compassion in the criminal justice system. Truly heartbreaking.

šŸ„ Texas Declares State of Disaster Over Screwworm Threat

File this one under ā€œstuff you don’t want to Google before dinner.ā€ Texas has declared a statewide disaster as officials work to prevent an invasion of the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly whose larvae eat living tissue in animals (and occasionally humans 😬).

While no cases have been found in Texas yet, recent outbreaks in northern Mexico have put agriculture officials on high alert. The state has teamed up with the USDA to release sterile flies near the border to stop the pest’s spread, an approach that worked when the parasite was first eradicated in 1966.

So far, thousands of traps and wildlife inspections show no signs of infestation in Texas. Still, vets and livestock owners are being urged to stay watchful for any suspicious wounds.

šŸŽ¶ The Rustic Brings Live Music Back to Grandscape

Big news for North Texas concert lovers: The Rustic, the live music venue and restaurant from Dallas, is taking over the former Lava Cantina space at Grandscape in The Colony this summer.

It’ll be the brand’s second DFW spot, and if it’s anything like their Uptown Dallas location, you can count on packed patios, cold beer, and that perfect mix of local flavor and live music under the stars.

Looks like Grandscape just found its new weekend hangout.

Correct Answer: B) Special Election results for City Council Place 1

Looks like Frisco’s political season is warming up before the weather does. Ann Anderson will officially be sworn in later this month, right after all the campaign signs finally disappear from our intersections.
