The Monday Scoop for Frisco
Howdy, Frisco
Hope your weekend was as exciting as trying to cross Preston Road during rush hour without losing your mind. We’ve got some serious news this week, big wins for local elections, and some all star women's sports headed our way, plus a stellar lineup of events to keep your calendar packed and your AC running.

🕌 Security Guard Stabbed at Frisco Mosque During Prayers
A frightening scene unfolded Saturday night at the Islamic Center of Frisco. Omar Yaqoob, a security guard for the mosque, was stabbed during Isha Salah, one of the five daily Muslim prayers. Frisco Police responded quickly and arrested the suspect, who officials say had regularly attended the mosque for months.
Yaqoob is now in stable condition and recovering at home. The mosque briefly closed but reopened Sunday afternoon with extra police presence. Authorities say there’s no indication this was a hate crime, but the investigation is still ongoing.
🗳️ Burt Thakur & Jared Elad Win Frisco City Council Runoffs
History was made this weekend. Burt Thakur defeated incumbent Tammy Meinershagen for Place 2 and will become the city’s first Indian American councilmember. Meanwhile, Jared Elad won Place 4, beating fellow Indian American candidate Gopal Ponangi.
These races came after a heated election cycle marked by controversy, including leaked audio of Meinershagen criticizing the Indian community’s integration. Voter turnout was strong, and both Elad and Thakur say they’re committed to building bridges, even if they don’t always agree on policy.
