The Monday Scoop for Frisco
Howdy, Frisco!
Hope the weekend treated you well, whether that meant World Cup watch parties, actual grocery shopping, or successfully avoiding both. This week we're looking back at how two European World Cup squads fell in love with Texas (boots, barbecue, and all), plus a sad update out of Frisco Lakes, a small zoning change in west Frisco, and your usual dose of roadwork to route around. There's also a few days of simpler events ahead, movie nights, trivia, and yes, more soccer. Let's get into it

European World Cup Teams Got a Kick Out of Texas While Training in Dallas Suburbs
Sweden and Czechia may have exited the World Cup early, but their weeks spent training in Frisco and Mansfield left a lasting impression, on the teams and on the cities hosting them.
Sweden trained at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, even as the venue was mid construction, while Czechia used Texas Health Mansfield Stadium just days after it opened
Both teams fully embraced the Texas experience, Czechia sampled Joe T. Garcia's and Hurtado's Barbecue and caught a Rangers game, while Sweden played a little football at The Star and 12 players got special access to golf at PGA Frisco's Fields Ranch East
Mansfield gifted Czechia's coach custom Lucchese boots with his initials and the national coat of arms, and set up a "branding bar" for players to customize leather luggage tags
Local businesses got in on it too, Blue Goose Cantina printed a Swedish translated menu and sold a special blue Swedish margarita during the tournament
Frisco officials hope the exposure helps the city's bid to host 2031 Women's World Cup games, while Mansfield's tourism office says it now joins the ranks of Texas cities tied to Czech culture, alongside West, Ennis, and Praha
Wild to think our sleepy stadium parking lots hosted actual World Cup teams, "Hej Y'all" might be my new favorite phrase to come out of this whole tournament.

ποΈ Frisco Rezones 2 Acres in West Frisco to Allow Townhomes, Offices
Frisco City Council unanimously approved rezoning a small stretch of land off FM 423 from agricultural to planned development, opening the door for townhomes and office space.
The 2.1 acre site currently has an automotive repair shop on the north end, with the rest of the lot undeveloped
Neighbors raised concerns about trash, vehicles along the neighborhood road, and existing fencing, the city says code enforcement will address those issues
Sheds and a mobile home currently on the site will need to be removed now that the zoning has changed
A fence, landscape buffer, and sidewalk are expected to be added around the automotive business by August 2027
Council member Laura Rummel called it "a giant step in the right direction" for an area the city has wanted to clean up for a while
Small parcel, but it's the kind of quiet zoning change that ends up reshaping a whole corner of town a few years down the road.
