The Monday Scoop for Frisco

Howdy, Frisco! Happy Memorial Day

Before we jump into the chaos (because there is always chaos), let’s pause for a second.

Memorial Day isn’t just long weekends, backyard brisket, and “who brought the potato salad?” debates. It’s a day to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. So whether you’re at the lake, the water park, or just chilling inside avoiding the humidity, take a quiet moment today.

Okay. Deep breath.

Now let’s talk Frisco.

🎓 Twin Brother Accepts Posthumous Diploma at Memorial Graduation

Memorial High School’s graduation ceremony Thursday included one of the most emotional moments this city has seen in a long time.

Austin Metcalf, who was tragically killed during a track meet in April 2025, was honored during the ceremony. His twin brother, Hunter, first walked the stage to receive his own diploma…then returned moments later to accept Austin’s diploma on his behalf.

The crowd stood for 30 seconds.

No one rushed it.
No one clapped early.
Just a long, heavy, respectful standing ovation.

The Metcalf family remains under a gag order tied to the ongoing criminal case. The trial connected to Austin’s death is scheduled to begin June 1.

It was a reminder that behind headlines, there are families. And behind school buildings, there are real kids.

One year in.

In May, our students stood at Microsoft Headquarters in Las Colinas and spoke about what they learned this year.

One first-grader started the year below grade level. She finished writing her own paragraphs and testing into second grade.

One third-grader arrived in January behind where she was supposed to be. She finished reading at a fourth grade level. 125 words per minute, 98 percent accuracy.

One five-year-old, who wouldn’t start kindergarten until fall 2026, joined first grade in March. Six weeks later, she was halfway through the year.

This is some of what one year at The Grove produced.

A private microschool in Frisco. Six to ten students per grove. Grades 1 through 6. Now admitting for the 2026–2027 school year. Limited availability remains.

🏨 World Cup Hotel Bookings Running “Soft”

With less than a month until the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, hotel bookings across DFW (including Frisco) are reportedly behind early projections.

Highlights:

  • 80% of hotels say bookings are below forecasts

  • 70% in Dallas/Houston reporting slower pace

  • Visa barriers + travel costs cited as factors

  • Domestic travelers outpacing international fans

Translation:
We thought the world was coming.
Instead it’s more like “North Texas is coming.”

Frisco council data shows 24 of 28 hotels are seeing softer June/July bookings. Visit Frisco says they’re ready to activate targeted campaigns if needed.

So if you were thinking:
“Maybe I’ll wait to book.”
This might be your window.

⚾ RoughRiders Walk Their Way to Comeback Win

The RoughRiders said:
“We don’t need hits. We need patience.”

Frisco drew 10 walks Saturday night to come back and beat San Antonio 7–5.

Highlights:

  • Season high 10 walks

  • Big seventh inning rally

  • First save for Jonathan Brand

  • Throwback Sunday + Ian Kinsler bobblehead next

Also…fireworks.

If you needed a reason to go to Riders Field this week:
Bobblehead + baseball + summer fireworks.

That’s a trifecta.

🚧 Weekly Roadwork Roundup

Here’s where your GPS will lie to you this week:

  • WB Rolater Rd. at Whittingham Dr.

  • 2882 Doe Creek Trl.

  • Morgan Hill Rd. & Old Barn Dr. (Pearson Farms)

Translation:
Leave 7 minutes earlier.
Or blame “roadwork” and take the scenic route.
