Frisco Insider - Judge + Trash Update + More

The Friday Recap for Frisco

Howdy, Frisco! Happy Friday.

This week's news is a real mixed bag, some good news for your wallet, a couple of hard stories out of the courts, and an exciting development update. There's also a great weekend ahead, headlined by the Art in the Arena festival taking over Comerica Center.

Let's get into it.

🗑️ Frisco Trash, Recycling Rates to Drop 10% Under New Contract

Good news for your monthly bills: Frisco residents are getting a rate cut on trash and recycling service.

  • City Council approved a new 10 year contract with Waste Connection Lone Star on Aug. 18, running through 2037

  • Residential rates will drop from $15.39 to $13.85 per month in the first year

  • New trash and recycling bins will roll out citywide through the second and third quarters of 2027, featuring the city logo and a QR code linking to educational resources

  • Commercial front load rates will rise 13.75% annually through 2032 before shifting to CPI based adjustments

  • A consultant's analysis found Frisco's rates compare favorably to nearby cities, with only Allen coming in lower

A rare bit of news where the city bill actually goes down instead of up, worth celebrating.

⚠️ Frisco Mom Arrested in Child Abuse Case

A serious story out of Frisco this week: police arrested a woman on charges connected to injuring and endangering a child.

  • 49 year old Mary Ann Burton was arrested Aug. 11 following a welfare check at her home in the 12000 block of Bethel Drive

  • She faces charges of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury and child endangerment

  • Burton is held in the Collin County jail on $1.5 million bond

  • Police have not released additional details about the child or the ongoing investigation

  • Anyone with information is asked to call Frisco PD at 972-292-6010, or text FRISCOPD to 847411

Just hoping for the child's safety and full recovery.

⚖️ Trial Judge Removed From Karmelo Anthony Case as Teen Seeks New Trial

An update in the case surrounding the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a Frisco ISD track meet last year.

  • Judge John Roach has been removed from further proceedings after Karmelo Anthony's defense team argued his post verdict public comments compromised his impartiality

  • A visiting judge, Sid Harle of San Antonio, granted the recusal, finding grounds where "the respondent judge's impartiality might reasonably be questioned"

  • Anthony, convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in June, is seeking a new trial, with a hearing on that motion scheduled for this week

  • Prosecutors have disputed the defense's characterization of the trial proceedings

A case that's clearly still generating strong feelings locally, I’ll keep an eye on how the new trial motion plays out.

🏡 Frisco Station Sells Land to Toll Brothers for First Luxury Single-Family Community

Frisco Station is adding single family homes to its mix for the first time, with Toll Brothers set to build a new luxury community.

  • The 23 acre land sale covers Frisco Station's first single family residential neighborhood within the larger 242 acre mixed use development

  • Homes will range from 2,800 to 4,700 square feet on 64 foot wide homesites, with 1 and 2 story design options

  • Development is expected to begin spring 2027, with homes going on sale fall 2028

  • The community will sit within walking distance of The Star and Hall Park, with access to Frisco Station's 30 acre park and trail system

  • This comes alongside an updated master plan for The Towers District, which could add up to 3 million square feet of office space

Frisco Station's been mostly offices, apartments, and hotels so far, so single family homes this close to The Star is a genuinely new option for the area.
