Frisco Insider - Jobs + Scorpions + More

The Friday Recap for Frisco

Howdy, Frisco!

Happy Friday! We made it through Labor Day burgers, surprise rain showers, and yet another week of “is this fall yet?” confusion. The mornings are teasing cooler temps, but the afternoons are still giving us a full-on Texas sweat lodge. Either way, it’s the first full weekend of September, which means new city news, scorpions on the loose, and a jam packed events lineup to keep you busy (and out of the heat).

Frisco Eyes $304.7M Budget with More Public Safety Jobs & Higher Utility Bills

The city is set to vote on a $304.7 million budget that keeps the tax rate flat but adds dozens of new jobs, especially in public safety.

📍 Vote set for: Sept. 16 City Council meeting
👮 Public safety: +48 new positions (13 police jobs, 14 Parks & Rec jobs, new firefighter roles, and more)
🚰 Utility rates: +9% for water, +15% for sewer, +$1 recycling increase → avg. $17/month higher bill
🏡 Homestead exemption: Recently raised from 15% to 20%, saving the average homeowner ~$137

Most of the money goes to police, fire, and parks, with $3.3 million earmarked to replace 35 police vehicles. Translation: more officers, more park staff, better libraries, but also pricier water bills when you forget to turn off the sprinkler.

Scorpion Surge in North Texas Homes

Nope, you’re not imagining things, scorpions really are showing up more often in Frisco homes this year.

📍 Hotspots: Far north Frisco, especially near greenbelts & mulch beds
🦂 Common type: Striped bark scorpion (venomous but not deadly, ~2.5 inches long)
🌧️ Why now: Because a wet summer means more creepy crawlies, plus breeding season before winter

One Frisco resident says she’s been catching one or two a week with sticky traps and has decided to move homes altogether. Experts say scorpions actually help by eating ants and spiders….but let’s be honest, nobody’s putting out a “Welcome Home” mat for them.

$427K Grant Launches Drone-First Responder Program for Frisco Police

Frisco Police just got the green light (and the funding) for a drone as a first responder program to fight vehicle crimes.

💸 Grant awarded: $427,500 (state + city match)
⚡ Response time: Drones can launch and arrive within 90 seconds in a 3 mile radius
🤝 Collaboration: Regional task force with Prosper, Celina, Denton, and Collin County
🛠️ What’s included: Drones, docks, cameras, FAA regulatory services, piloting software

Frisco hopes this will cut response times and boost officer safety. So don’t be surprised if you see a buzzing police drone before you see a squad car, it’s basically Robocop with propellers.
