Frisco Insider - Jewelry Scam + Election + More

The Monday Scoop for Frisco

Howdy, Frisco, & Hello February!

January is finally in the rearview mirror. The snow has melted (mostly), the driveways are visible again (mostly). Half the neighborhood still has snowy patches clinging to dear life, the other half is mowing their lawns again, because, of course, Texas.

And now that it’s February, let’s be honest, most of us have already broken at least one New Year’s resolution. But hey, this month is all about second chances, whether that’s getting back to the gym, reconnecting with friends, or maybe just surviving Monday with fewer coffee refills.

Let’s dive into what’s been happening around town.

🗳️ Ann Anderson Wins Frisco City Council Place 1 Race

It was a nail biter on Saturday night, but Ann Anderson pulled off a narrow victory over Mark Piland in the Frisco City Council Place 1 special election.

  • Anderson received 4,052 votes (50.66%), edging out Piland’s 3,946 (49.34%) ,a difference of just 106 votes.

  • Turnout wasn’t huge, about 5% in Collin County and 7% in Denton County, but the results mark a new chapter for Frisco leadership.

  • The election fills the seat vacated by John Keating, who’s now running for mayor this May.

This election came down to the wire. In a city growing as fast as Frisco, even a handful of votes can make history.

💰 $55 Million Elder Fraud Scheme Busted, Jewelry Stores Raided in Frisco & Irving

This one sounds like something out of a crime drama, but it’s very real. Two North Texas jewelry stores, including Saima Jewelers in Frisco, were raided Thursday as part of a massive elder fraud and gold laundering investigation.

  • Authorities say scammers convinced elderly victims to buy gold under false pretenses, then couriers delivered it to these stores.

  • The gold was melted down and sold as jewelry or allegedly smuggled overseas.

  • Three arrests were made, two in Irving and one in Frisco.

  • More than $7 million stolen from Collin County victims, all over age 65, with statewide losses topping $55 million.

Sheriff Jim Skinner said the sting was the result of months of multi-agency coordination, including help from Homeland Security and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. He added, “This operation isn’t over, more arrests are coming.”

So if you’ve recently bought jewelry that came with a too good to be true price tag…..maybe double check where it came from.

🚨 Frisco Teacher Arrested for Child Sexual Abuse

A 30 year old Frisco man, Eric Moore, was arrested last week after a child abuse investigation at North Texas Collegiate Academy’s East Campus in Little Elm.

Moore faces charges of:

  • Continuous sexual abuse of a child (first-degree felony)

  • Indecency with a child (second-degree felony)

The school placed Moore on leave immediately on January 7 after an outcry was reported, and he resigned shortly after.

Police are continuing their investigation and encouraging anyone with information to contact Little Elm police. Officials say resources and support are being made available to all affected families.

💔 Community Mourns Gracie Brito, ‘A Handprint on My Heart’

As Frisco continues to mourn the loss of Wakeland High sophomores Gracie Brito and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Angle, tributes have poured in from across the city.

Gracie’s Express Cheer team is dedicating their upcoming performance at the American Cheerleaders Association Grand Nationals in her honor. Her teammates will wear yellow ribbons and carry her positivity onto the mat, a reflection of the joy she brought to everyone around her.

Her sister, Emma Brito, shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, calling Gracie her “guardian angel” and writing, “You made me, me. Everything I do in this life is now all for you.”

The Frisco community continues to come reminding us all that in moments of heartbreak, this city always shows up for its own. 💛
