The Friday Recap for Frisco

Howdy, Frisco

Today’s newsletter feels different.

Mourning Austin Metcalf

Our community is hurting. On Wednesday morning, 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a student-athlete at Memorial High School, lost his life after being stabbed at the District 11-5A track meet held at Kuykendall Stadium. His twin brother, Hunter, was with him. His family is grieving. His friends are mourning. And across Frisco, there’s a collective sense of heartbreak that something like this could happen during what should’ve been an ordinary school day.

Austin was more than a student, he was a linebacker, a 4.0 student, a National Honor Society member, a brother, and a son who had his sights set on college football. His family described him as a leader, a peacemaker, someone who always tried to make things better for those around him.

The suspect, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony from Centennial High School, has been arrested and charged with murder. Frisco Police are still investigating what led up to the incident, but initial accounts suggest an argument broke out about seating under the tent during a weather delay.

The district had five certified athletic trainers on site and says they responded quickly. But the Metcalf family is asking questions, about how a weapon was brought into the stadium, about what protocols were in place, and whether this tragedy could’ve been prevented.

A vigil was held Wednesday night at Hope Fellowship Church, filled with hundreds of people, teammates, classmates, friends, and strangers, all gathered to honor Austin’s life.

If you have kids, now might be a good time to check in with them. This has shaken a lot of people.

We’re thinking of Austin’s family, of Hunter, of everyone at Memorial High. And we’re reminded that our community is still small enough to feel something like this deep in our bones.

Frisco Approves 2040 Comprehensive Plan

While this week’s focus is on mourning, city planning also moves forward. Frisco’s City Council officially approved its 2040 Comprehensive Plan, a long-term blueprint for how the city will grow as the population heads toward a projected 330,000 residents.

🔍 The plan covers:

  • Land use & zoning

  • Transportation improvements (more walkable areas, safer streets)

  • Housing and neighborhood development

  • Open space and parks

Public feedback played a big role in shaping it. Many residents voiced a desire for fewer apartments, more outdoor venues, and stronger development in both east and west Frisco.

If you're curious, you can read the full plan and see how it may impact your part of town at friscotexas.gov.
