Frisco Insider - Election + Ice Cream + More

The Friday Recap for Frisco

Howdy, Frisco! Happy Friday, and somehow…Happy May?!

How is it already May 1st? I blinked and we went from “new year, new me” to “okay but where did April go?”

This month better be nice to us. I’m expecting sunshine, good vibes, fewer construction cones, and maybe a little less political drama. Speaking of…Election Day is tomorrow. If you’d like to exercise your right to vote, now’s the time. More on that below.

Let’s get into it.

🗳 Frisco’s Mayor Race Heats Up, Election Ends Tomorrow

Frisco is choosing a new mayor, and there’s no incumbent on the ballot for the first time in years.

Four candidates are running:

  • Mark Hill

  • John Keating

  • Shona Sowell

  • Rod Vilhauer

With no clear majority favorite, a runoff is very likely.

The race has drawn attention over campaign rhetoric and sharp differences between candidates. Some community members have expressed concerns about divisive messaging during the campaign, particularly around religion and immigration. Others say the race reflects broader political dynamics across Denton and Collin counties.

What you need to know:

  • Election Day is Saturday, May 2

  • Also on the ballot: 2 City Council seats + 2 Frisco ISD seats

  • Denton and Collin County voters will cast ballots in their respective counties

And just to be very clear: Frisco Insider does not take sides in local elections, ever. We are simply reporting what’s happening in our city and what neighbors are talking about. Period.

However you feel about it, this election matters. If you’d like to vote, tomorrow’s your last chance.

Authentic Chinese Food Made Fresh

Every Frisco local knows the challenge: you want something fresh, flavorful, and satisfying, but not another chain or drive through meal. That’s where Kitchen Master Bistro steps in.

Tucked in the heart of Frisco, this local favorite is built around one idea, food should feel both homemade and exciting. From chef crafted entrées to signature sauces that took years to perfect, every dish has a story. It’s not fast food. It’s food made by people who care about what ends up on your plate.

Whether it’s a quiet lunch break, a casual date night, or a family dinner spot that actually pleases everyone, Kitchen Master Bistro turns simple meals into moments worth slowing down for.

Locals say you taste the difference starting with the first bite. Maybe that’s why so many say it feels like “Frisco’s hidden gem.”

🍦 Baskin Robbins Opening Second Frisco Location

Big ice cream news (which honestly might be the most unifying headline of the week).

Baskin Robbins is opening its second Frisco location:

📍 5251 Panther Creek Parkway
🗓 Soft opening May 1

Menu highlights:

  • Old Fashioned Butter Pecan

  • Banana Dulce de Leche

  • Cherries Jubilee

  • Chocolate Chip

  • Custom cakes and pies

The Preston Road location isn’t going anywhere, this is just extra scoop coverage for North Frisco.

May is officially ice cream season. I don’t make the rules.

⚽ Toyota Stadium Renovation Gets $9.2M Boost

Toyota Stadium’s glow up just got more expensive.

City Council approved an additional $9.26 million for:

  • Seating bowl repairs (~$7.5M)

  • Wi-Fi restoration (~$1.75M)

Total renovation cost? Still sitting at $182 million, but climbing carefully.

The east side of the stadium is expected to reopen ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Sweden’s national team will use Frisco as its official base camp.

Translation: We’re getting better seats and better Wi-Fi before the world shows up. Good.

♻️ $61 Million Recycling Center Opens in Frisco

Frisco just opened a 120,000 square foot materials recovery facility, aka a high tech recycling center.

Highlights:

  • $61 million investment

  • Single stream recycling sorting

  • Optical sorters + advanced glass cleanup systems

  • ~35 full-time jobs created

It will serve Frisco, McKinney, and broader DFW communities.

Big picture? As North Texas keeps growing, this facility helps manage waste smarter and keep more material out of landfills.

We love development that doesn’t just mean more traffic.
