The Friday Recap for Frisco

Howdy, Frisco. Happy 2026
The confetti’s been swept, your resolutions are still (mostly) intact, and half of Frisco is living off leftover queso and determination. Welcome to the first Frisco Insider of 2026, where we’re kicking off the year with some big local changes, exciting milestones, and a few good excuses to leave the house before your gym membership renews itself.
Whether you’re diving into Dry January, still in recovery from New Year’s Eve, or just trying to remember what day it is….here’s your news, your weekend plans, and your local weather, with a side of small town charm.

🍽️ Gloria’s Latin Cuisine Completes Move from Frisco to Plano
Say goodbye to Gloria’s in Frisco, and hello to their brand-new digs just down the street in Plano! The beloved Salvadoran and Tex-Mex spot officially opened its doors at 8601 Preston Rd on January 1, bringing fresh decor, a lively atmosphere, and the same fan-favorite menu. This is basically 2 minutes from Stonebriar.
Expect Salvadoran pupusas, sizzling carne asada, and that perfect slice of flan you’ll somehow still have room for.
The new location features a modern, open concept bar and patio setup perfect for happy hours and date nights.
“We’re excited to bring a modern dining experience to our guests,” said owner Gloria Fuentes.
If you were a regular at the Frisco location, don’t worry, the short drive to Plano comes with the same warm service and weekend energy that made Gloria’s a local staple.

🚓 Frisco Police Arrest Suspect After Barricade Standoff
A dramatic Wednesday morning unfolded near Stonebrook Parkway and Boulder Way when Frisco PD arrested 42 year old Nima Ghani, who allegedly stole a vehicle and later barricaded himself inside a home.
Police surrounded the residence with K9 and drone units while SWAT negotiators worked to bring the situation under control.
The standoff ended peacefully around 12:30 PM, with Ghani taken into custody.
He faces multiple charges, including vehicle theft, evading arrest, and drug possession.
No one else was inside the home, and no injuries were reported, a tense but thankfully safe outcome for the neighborhood.
🚔 Frisco PD Introduces Grappler Tech to Stop Dangerous Car Chases
If you’ve ever wondered how Frisco PD plans to stop high speed chases without wrecking half the city, meet The Grappler.
This new pursuit device drops from a patrol car’s front bumper, ropes a suspect’s rear wheel, and safely brings them to a stop (yes, it’s as cool as it sounds).
Officers completed training over Christmas week.
The Grappler reduces the risk to officers and bystanders during pursuits.
Originally invented by Leonard Stock after watching TV car chases, and now used nationwide.
Frisco joins agencies like the Border Patrol and DPS in using this game changing tech. So if you’re thinking about running from Frisco PD….maybe don’t haha.
🏈 Frisco ISD Enters New Era as Wakeland Moves to Class 6A
Big news for Frisco sports. Wakeland High School is officially moving up to Class 6A, the highest level of UIL competition, for the 2026–27 school year.
The move means tougher opponents, statewide visibility, and new rivalries.
Wakeland now surpasses the 2,215 student threshold for 6A.
Other Frisco high schools will stay in 5A, split across Divisions I and II.
This marks the first time in district history that Frisco ISD will field a 6A high school, showcasing how fast our city, and its athletic talent, continue to grow. District assignments for new matchups drop in February, so get ready, Wolverines, it’s game time on a whole new level.
